Construction has begun on the All Veterans Memorial in Fort Myers.

General contractor Suffolk says it has finalized the permits to build the memorial at Centennial Park in the city’s downtown. It “will serve as a place of reflection, remembrance and community gathering.”

The monument, a spokesperson says, will be made primarily of granite — with a granite centerpiece and multiple granite pedestals around it. A circular memorial will be about 30 feet wide, with a central element and a 25-foot flagpole.

Benches will be about seven feet long.

It is scheduled to be complete in time for the semiquincentennial — the national celebration of the country’s 250th birthday.

Suffolk says in a statement that it is contributing its construction management services, design coordination and permitting services in kind and that trade partners have also donated their services.
