For Charlotte County residents facing a brain tumor, aneurysm or serious spinal disorder, seeing a neurosurgeon has historically required an hour-long drive — and that’s without traffic.

AdventHealth, a faith-based nonprofit health system based in Altamonte Springs, is trying to close that gap with the opening of a neurosurgery clinic in Port Charlotte. It’s the latest step in the health system’s expansion across the county since acquiring the former ShorePoint Health network last year.

AdventHealth Medical Group Neurosurgery at Port Charlotte, which marked its grand opening on Aug. 14, offers surgical and nonsurgical treatment for conditions affecting the brain and spine. The practice is led by Dr. Amrith Jamoona, a neurosurgeon who recently relocated to the area after identifying a shortage of specialty care.

“When someone is facing a condition that affects the brain or spine, getting answers and starting treatment quickly can make a real difference,” Jamoona says in a release. “Our goal is to provide advanced treatment options while helping patients and families feel supported every step of the way.”

The clinic treats brain tumors, aneurysms, stroke-related conditions and spinal disorders. Its services include minimally invasive procedures, deep brain stimulation, endovascular neurosurgery and brain and spinal surgery.

Jamoona will work with neurologists, primary care doctors and other AdventHealth specialists to coordinate patients’ treatment, he says. Hospital leaders say the practice will complement the system’s stroke program and help it build a broader network of neurological services in Southwest Florida.

“People shouldn’t have to leave their community to receive expert brain and spine care,” Adam Johnson, president and CEO of AdventHealth Port Charlotte, says in the release. “This new practice allows more patients to get the care they need while staying close to the people who support them most.”

The clinic’s opening comes about 18 months after AdventHealth entered the Charlotte County market by purchasing ShorePoint Health Port Charlotte and related assets from affiliates of Community Health Systems. The deal closed March 1, 2025, bringing the hospital, physician practices, outpatient services and a freestanding Cape Coral emergency department into AdventHealth’s network.

The health system renamed the hospital AdventHealth Port Charlotte and brought more than 1,300 employees and 80 providers into its organization, according to AdventHealth’s website.

But the hospital’s roots in Charlotte County stretch back decades. The Port Charlotte facility opened in 1962 with 50 beds and grew into a full-service hospital serving Charlotte and neighboring counties. Today, it provides emergency, cardiac, surgical, orthopedic and maternity care and operates Charlotte County’s only licensed obstetric and pediatric hospital units, according to AdventHealth.

AdventHealth’s arrival followed a turbulent period for the region’s health care network. The former ShorePoint Health Punta Gorda hospital was permanently closed after sustaining damage from hurricanes Helene and Milton in 2024. AdventHealth acquired the Punta Gorda property as part of its ShorePoint transaction but has not announced a final plan for the former hospital campus.

AdventHealth is moving forward with a separate freestanding emergency department near Jones Loop Road and Mac Ever Street in Punta Gorda. The proposed facility is expected to offer 24-hour emergency care and is being developed in phases as AdventHealth continues evaluating the community’s long-term needs, according to the health system.

The neurosurgery practice represents another piece of that regional buildout — this time focused on specialized care that residents might otherwise seek in Fort Myers, Sarasota or farther away.

For patients recovering from brain or spinal surgery, reducing travel time makes follow-up appointments and rehabilitation easier, AdventHealth says, particularly when relatives or caregivers are involved.

The new AdventHealth Medical Group Neurosurgery at Port Charlotte is located at 2400 Harbor Blvd. in Suite 5. AdventHealth is an $18 billion nonprofit hospital system with facilities across nine states — Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, North Carolina, Texas and Wisconsin.
