A Bradenton-based off-price retailer is growing its footprint by entering a new state and expanding its presence in a major fashion capital. Bealls will open its first stores in Michigan this fall, the company says, and it has grown its buying office in New York City.

Entering the Michigan market will mark the 23rd state for Bealls, which has a growth strategy based on broadening its reach and increasing brand awareness.

"We see a strong fit for Bealls in Michigan and are excited to open our doors there," Bealls CEO Matt Beall says in a statement. "As we expand into new markets across America, brand awareness remains our biggest opportunity. We know we compete with the best retailers in America on brands, style, quality and value. Michigan gives us the chance to introduce ourselves to new guests, serve new communities and increase awareness of the Bealls brand."

Bealls will open its first Michigan stores this fall in Owosso, Charlotte, Coldwater and Sturgis; next, locations in Niles and Clio are planned to open in spring 2027. The new Michigan stores are expected to average about 20,000 square feet and provide family apparel, footwear, accessories, home décor, housewares, gifts and seasonal products. They will feature new merchandise arriving daily, including national and exclusive brands.

The new Michigan stores will fit within the company’s broader growth initiative, which includes opening 25 new stores across 12 states in fall 2026 and spring 2027, according to a statement.

In addition to announcing it will be entering Michigan, Bealls marked another milestone recently, with the expansion of its buying office in New York City.

"Growing our presence in New York gives our buying teams closer access to the brands, trends and relationships that help us deliver value and relevance to guests," Beall says in the statement. "It is an important part of how we continue to support a larger store base and bring compelling assortments to more communities."

Bealls, which has been family-owned for 111 years, operates more than 650 stores across 22 states under the names Bealls, Bealls Florida, and Home Centric. Bealls had $1.93 billion in revenue in 2024 and has 14,650 employees, according to the Business Observer's 2025 Big Book of Business.
