FORT MYERS — Fort Myers Technical College is launching a pilot ground school that will teach students about aerodynamics and communications procedures.

Once they complete the school program, students can take the Federal Aviation Administration's private pilot knowledge test required for a license. Classes start Jan. 26 and the course lasts 14 weeks.

“Fort Myers Technical College has recognized a growing need in Southwest Florida for knowledgeable professionals that are capable of meeting the aviation industry needs,” says Bill McCormick, director of Fort Myers Technical College, in a statement. “The new pilot ground school will prepare students for the aviation world by teaching the fundamentals of flight training in preparation for FAA testing and hands-on flight experience.”

The evening course combines industry-standard technology with instruction by licensed and certified teaching professionals. Students will become familiar with aircraft systems, flight instruments, regulations, procedures and airport operations, weather, weather services, aircraft performance, cross-country flight planning and navigation.

Founded in 1966, Fort Myers Technical College provides more than 30 vocational and technical programs, including business, hospitality, technology, health science, education, automotive and construction.
