Tim Ferguson, recently hired to bring in more business in Pasco County for a national mortgage firm, has quite the unusual side job: major league baseball scout.
A left-handed pitcher, Ferguson played minor league baseball in the Montreal Expos organization; coached a variety of minor league teams; and coached college baseball at Palm Beach State College. He also was a scout for the Cleveland Indians and is currently an associate scout for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Ferguson recently joined Wisconsin-based GSF Mortgage Corp., working out of the company's New Port Richey branch. Ferguson, who started in the mortgage industry in 1999, says he likes the “competitiveness” and “challenge” of the mortgage industry. “Baseball is a very numbers-oriented sport,” he tells Coffee Talk.
In his position at GSF, like his time in baseball, Ferguson evaluates his performance and examines his metrics, he says. Ferguson says his experience as a coach plays into his role even more than his experience as a player. It's about “coaching the client on what they need to do to accomplish the end goal of owning their own home,” he says. He also says he coaches other clients and referral sources, such as real estate agents, builders, attorneys and financial advisors.
The best part of his job? Ferguson says it's working with people. “The reality is for most people, purchasing a home is the biggest purchase and investment they're going to make in their lives,” he says. “Being able to participate in that with them — that's my favorite part.”
