AdventHealth, one of the largest nonprofit Protestant healthcare systems in the U.S., is readying to embark on a $214 million expansion of its Carrollwood hospital to meet growing inpatient and surgical demands, the health system announced Thursday.

The Altamonte Springs-based health care system will soon begin construction on its Carrollwood facility, adding a six-story patient tower, a five-story parking garage, and expanding surgical and specialty services.

“We are seeing more incidence of cancer and other conditions that affect younger and younger populations so this will allow us to do more procedures, make it easier, make it more accessible,” says Joe Johnson, president and ceo of AdventHealth Carrollwood, in a video release. “We also want to make sure that the screening and the recovery process is enhanced so this will allow for us to incorporate more beds, more capacity and more procedural capacity as well.”

The new tower will hold 64 inpatient beds and expand the hospital’s preoperative and post-anesthesia care capacity. It will also house a third cardiac catheterization and electrophysiology lab, and include extra space for future expansion efforts.

The parking garage is expected to open ahead of the tower, which is projected to welcome patients in 2029.

AdventHealth is investing in its Carrollwood facility at a time when Hillsborough County continues to grow rapidly, with more than 300,000 residents living within a short distance of the hospital, according to a release. Demand for complex and inpatient care has steadily increased, the hospital says, with many patients currently traveling outside the area for higher-acuity services.

AdventHealth is now the 10th largest hospital group in the nation, according to industry trade publication Becker’s Hospital Review, with $23 billion in operating revenue in 2025. The healthcare system operates hospitals in nine states, from Colorado to Texas to Wisconsin.
