While the gender wage gap is a commonly acknowledged and discussed issue, a new report from Osum, an AI-driven market research company, holds some surprising data about industries where women business owners take the lead over men in earnings.

The report, States With The Most Successful Female Business Owners, lists the top five industries for female-leading earnings as car dealerships, clothing stores, crop production, family services and advertising/PR. In total there are 11 industries where female business owners outpace male business owners in earnings.

In general, the most popular businesses for women in Florida are real estate, home services (such as cleaning) and beauty salons, the report found.

Osum reached out to several successful female entrepreneurs to get their take on the findings, and what more they thought could be done to boost female entrepreneurship.

Kari Byron, EXPLR co-founder and co-director of the National STEM Festival, commented, “I believe small business loans specifically for women would be an incredible way to encourage new businesses. Additionally, I feel that any program creating flexibility for women to be multifaceted — to be a mom, a woman, and a boss — will fuel female success and entrepreneurship nationwide."

This data is part of a larger study conducted by Osum on the states with the most successful female entrepreneurs. Florida placed No. 27 in these rankings.
