FORT MYERS — One of the largest construction projects in Lee County this year, a $20 million expansion project at LeeSar, is moving ahead with a big phase this week.

Vertical construction of the project, when 60 concrete panels are pulled up, set in place and braced to form the external shell, is expected to begin this week, according to a statement. The expansion at LeeSar, a supply chain organization that buys and distributes medical equipment to hospitals, fire departments and physician offices, requires a 300-ton crawler crane to lift concrete panels and erect external walls. It will take 10 tractor trailers to deliver all the crane components to the site, and another crane to erect it, the release adds. During the 5-day tilt wall erection process, a little more than eight million pounds of concrete will be lifted and set into place.

The expansion, internally, will mean 40-50 new job openings, says LeeSar President and CEO Bob Simpson. LeeSar currently has nearly 500 employees.

“We service all of EMS and the fire departments from Collier to Charlotte County, 80 physician offices and day surgery clinics, and about 22 hospitals; not to mention the medical village going up in Estero, the Gulf Coast Medical Center expansion and Golisano Children's Hospital which will open soon,” Simpson says in the release.

LeeSar was founded in 1998, when Lee Health and Sarasota Memorial Healthcare System developed it as a way to reduce costs for medical goods and services. The organization has since been joined by Central Florida Health, Huntsville Hospital in Huntsville, Ala., and numerous outpatient and surgery centers.
