FORT MYERS — The Lee Health board of directors approved a $306,293,011 expenditure as the final funding request for an expansion of Gulf Coast Medical Center.
According to a press release, the amount includes construction costs, furnishings, equipment and information systems needed to complete the project. The project will add 367,500 square feet to the 531,000-square-foot facility. It will also add 268 new inpatient beds to the hospital, bringing the total to 624.
“Now, with the funding approved, we can move forward with this exciting project that will help us better meet the medical needs of our community,” says Lee Health Vice President of Facility Management Dave Kistel in a statement.
The project includes the relocation of the trauma center, which is now at Lee Memorial Hospital, and allows for the growth of several departments. When the project is finished, specific high-acuity services will move from Lee Memorial Hospital to Gulf Coast Medical Center.
The funding passed with full support from the board of directors, the statement says. The board has already funded $41,305,071. The total cost of the expansion and renovation is $347,598,082. It is expected to be complete by 2021.
