FORT MYERS — Auto dealer Dennis Hampton plans to sell an inventory management system he developed for auto, boat and motorcycle dealers nationwide.
The system, the Dog, is currently monitoring hundreds of vehicles on dealership lots all across Florida, Indiana, Texas and Utah. The device, about the size of a matchbox, plugs into a connection on all cars built worldwide since 1996 to deliver real-time status of battery, fuel level and engine diagnostics. The device lets lot managers know the location and status of every vehicle in a company's inventory at all times.
Hampton has started a marketing campaign to sell the device nationally and plans to promote The Dog, Device on Guard, at the National Independent Automobile Dealers Association show next month.
The device helps dealers make sure the vehicles on their lots are ready to be driven because it alerts if there's a problem such as a dead battery. It also prevents theft because it alerts the dealer if the vehicle moves and it helps keep track of inventory on the lot. Dealers can also resell the device to owners who want to monitor their vehicles.
