FORT MYERS — Homebuilders pulled 9% more permits to build single-family homes in Lee County in May compared with the same month one year ago.

The permits builders pulled in May to build 98 single-family homes shows the residential housing market continues to strengthen in Lee County. The new home permits come even as the market for existing single-family homes slows.

In addition, contractors continued to pull permits to build apartments and condos. Builders pulled 26 permits to build multifamily homes in Lee County in May compared with 28 in May 2015, according to the Lee County Community Development Department.

Commercial construction slowed, however. Contractors pulled $2.1 million dollars' worth of commercial permits in May compared with $15.3 million in May 2015.
