Barancik Foundation in Sarasota names new president and CEO

A private family foundation in Sarasota with a nearly $800 million endowment has chosen a new leader. John Brothers has been named the next CEO and president of the Charles & Margery Barancik Foundation, effective Dec. 1, according to a statement. 

Brothers most recently served as the president of T. Rowe Price Foundation and T. Rowe Price Charitable, philanthropic entities associated with the Baltimore investment firm T. Rowe Price. In those roles, Brothers oversaw more than $750 million in combined assets and over $150 million in annual giving, according to a statement.

He was selected through a national search by the Barancik Foundation’s board that drew hundreds of competitive applicants, in a process facilitated by nonprofit executive recruiting firm Kittleman & Associates, headquartered in Chicago, according to a statement.

Brothers will succeed Teri Hansen, who is retiring from the Barancik Foundation after more than 10 years as its startup CEO. Under her leadership, the foundation has grown significantly , awarding more than $30 million in grants annually with a focus on education, humanitarian causes, arts and culture, the environment and medical research.

“It was an honor helping Chuck and Margie create their lasting legacy in our community,” Hansen says in a statement. “I’m excited to turn the reins over to John, whose deep professional experience, coupled with his values of humility, courage and trust, will position him perfectly to lead Barancik Foundation onward and upward.”

Before working for T. Rowe Price from 2015 until February, Brothers founded an international consulting firm that specialized in nonprofit, philanthropic and government sectors. He has also served as a scholar and a professor. His career began as a case manager and youth worker in the Midwest.

“I am deeply inspired by Barancik Foundation’s commitment to trusting and empowering local communities, because that is where lasting change starts,” Brothers says in a statement.

Brothers has authored multiple books on nonprofits, has spoken around the world about nonprofit and philanthropic effectiveness, and is considered a leader in trust-based philanthropy, according to the statement.

“Our board is confident that John will lead us to new levels of community impact as Barancik Foundation’s next chief executive,” Barancik Foundation Board Chair Rebecca Harris Barancik says in a statement. “He has the vision to build on Teri’s incredible foundational work as we continue to realize Chuck and Margie’s belief that philanthropy can make a meaningful difference in the lives of all people.”
