Retirees get some serious bang for their Social Security buck in Charlotte and Collier counties, according to SmartAsset.com's third annual survey of U.S. pensioners' prospects.

The personal finance website found that Collier and Charlotte ranked third and fifth, respectively, among Florida's 67 counties in terms of cost of living and average amount of annual Social Security benefits.

In Collier County, the cost of living is $20,716 and retirees there enjoy $21,523, on average, in Social Security payments. Only Sumter (home of retiree mecca The Villages) and Flagler counties ranked higher than Collier, according to SmartAsset.

Charlotte County's cost of living, meanwhile, is a tick lower, at $19,348. At $20,107, however, Charlotte retirees receive a more modest average annual Social Security benefit than their counterparts in Collier.

Extrapolating the same data to the national level, Collier ranks 275th while Charlotte ranks 299th. But again, no one can top Sumter County - it not only ranks first in Florida, but also first nationwide for cost of living and average annual Social Security income, nailing a perfect score of 100 in SmartAsset's survey.

So if soon-to-be retirees want to stretch that Social Security check as far as it will go, get thee to The Villages. But Charlotte and Collier counties certainly won't break the bank, either.
