Tampa Tank Inc.-Florida Structural Steel executives, considering a major investment in a solar energy system, first wanted to know all about the green components.

The money kind of green, that is.

But once officials with the global steel fabrication business looked at the data, they were hooked on the possibilities. The company, according to a statement, recently completed installation of a 507-kilowatt solar photovoltaic system at one of its three Tampa-based manufacturing facilities. At a half a megawatt, it's the largest solar installation for an industrial plant in Hillsborough County and one of the largest in the state, the company says.

Tampa-based Solar Advantage installed the solar systems for property developer Shepard Capital Partners. TTI-FSS leases the facility from Shepard Capital Partners.

“We're all concerned about the environment, so we were willing to consider solar energy as an alternative resource after evaluating three important factors,” TTI-FSS Founder Cal Reed says in the statement. “One, the return on investment; two, the viability of the manufacturing plant structure itself to support the number of solar cells necessary without having to reinforce it; and, third, the proposal from Solar Advantage to provide the quality and savings we expected at a reasonable cost. Fortunately, all three factors aligned to make this project possible.”

The steel company expects to save $75,000 to $80,000 in energy costs the first year, the release states, through drawing power first from the solar installation and second from local supplier Teco Energy. TTI-FSS will also benefit from a federal investment tax credit worth 30% of the system's cost.
