The first month of 2017 was a harsh one for layoffs in Florida.

Private employers in the state announced 1,718 layoffs through Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Notices in January, according to Florida Department of Economic Opportunity data.
That's up 48% year-over-year from January 2016, when there were 1,160 job cuts announced through WARN notices. (Not all jobs cuts show up on WARN Notices; the law requires most employers with
100 or more employees to give 60-calendar day advance notification of plant closings and mass layoffs.)

The 2017 WARN layoffs span the entire state and a host of industries. A chunk of the pending layoffs come from Palmetto-based Feld Entertainment, which announced plans to cut 462 jobs by May 28, when it officially closes the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. Other Gulf Coast companies on the list include:

Advantage Rent A Car and E-Z Rent A Car, Tampa: 25 layoffs by Feb. 10;

Macy's stores in Sarasota and Tampa: 172 layoffs by March 19;

Binder & Binder/LakePointe One, Tampa, finance and insurance: 65 layoffs by April 1;

Wal-Mart store in St. Petersburg: 79 layoffs by April 1.

February is also off to a quick start in layoffs, with more than 170 job cuts through Feb. 6, state data show. The list includes scientific and technical firm Schumacher Clinical Partners in Fort Myers, with 125 layoffs planned by Nov. 18.
