Florida has a nice shade of green when it comes to certified LEED certified construction projects, according to a new report.
But the state has a ways to go to catch up to the gold medal of green: California.
LEED, which stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is a voluntary green building ratings systems widely used worldwide. The U.S. Green Building Council recently analyzed all states, plus Washington, D.C., in total LEED metrics for 2016.
Florida finished fourth in number of LEED projects with 204 and ranked No. 11 in total LEED-certified green square feet, with 15.8 million, the report shows. It ranked No. 29 in square feet of green certified space per resident with 0.84, right behind Tennessee and Wisconsin and just ahead of Utah.
California, meanwhile, blows away all others, with a No. 1 ranking in total LEED projects (632) and total LEED-certified green square feet (88.9 million.) Texas and New York tied for second in total projects, with 211, according to the report.
Washington, D.C., is another big green area: The nation's capital posted a whopping 29.04 square feet of green certified space per resident. That's more than 25 square feet ahead of the No. 2 spot in that category, Massachusetts.
