The jaunt from Southwest Florida to the Keys just got a little easier.

That stems from Salt Island Seaplanes, which launched service from Naples Municipal Airport to Key West with a Cessna 206 amphibious seaplane in winter 2015. Salt Island officials recently announced the company has added a Fort Myers flight from Page Field to Key West for the 2016-2017 season. Flights began Oct. 26 and run through April 30.

Salt Island Seaplanes owner and pilot Jon Rector has been thinking about adding a Fort Myers flight for several months. He was waiting to find the right location and a second plane. “We have had a lot of demand to be able to service the Fort Myers area and with this new, convenient location we will be able to better accommodate travelers on the west coast of Florida,” Rector says in a statement.

Salt Island Seaplanes is an on-demand carrier that accepts reservation requests and confirms seats based on flight availability. The airline operates every day except Wednesdays, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Years Day. (Rector flies hikers around Lake Superior, Michigan over the summer.)

One-way flights to Key West are $220 and $440 for round trip, according to the statement. “This year's flight season will begin in time for our passengers to catch Fantasy Fest in Key West and we are really excited to now offer flights from Fort Myers,” says Rector, who has 16 years' experience flying floatplanes.

The Cessna 206 amphibious seaplane features four passenger seats and can accommodate larger parties in multiple trips. Page Field and Naples Airport both have private aviation terminals for easier boarding. And at a cruise speed of 125 miles per hour, guests arrive in Key West in a little more than 60 minutes. Says Rector: “Whether it's a creative business lunch trip, a surprise engagement, girls' weekend or guys' fishing trip, travel by seaplane is an exciting experience.”
