The Florida Department of Business & Professional Regulation is out to prove it's about more than obstacles and oversight.
One avenue there is a new 42-page eBook it published on starting and running a business in Florida. Instead of rules and sub-sections, this book profiles real-life Florida-based entrepreneurs, from the Jacksonville-area firefighters behind Firehouse Subs to a Barbaric Barbell, a Tallahassee athletic wear company.
“Opening a business can be an intimidating process, and that's exactly why we put this book together,” says DBPR Secretary Ken Lawson in the introduction. “I want to share with you some of the career advice and professional stories, both good and bad, I've heard from some of the amazing people who make our state work.”
The lessons learned section was notable for its insight into what went wrong in various business ventures. The lessons include:
Not starting a business at a younger age;
Not taking advantage of continuing education;
Not doing enough targeted marketing;
Working with clients with questionable finances;
Assuming coworkers had the same morals and ethical standards;
Choosing security over passion.
