Hiring outlook softens

The employment picture on the Gulf Coast isn't as sunny as it was last year.

Employers in Florida will continue to hire at a brisk pace in the third quarter, according to a recent survey of employers by labor firm Manpower. Every area of the Gulf Coast posted a positive net employment outlook in the third quarter, indicating more hiring than layoffs (data for Naples, Sarasota and Punta Gorda was not available).

But there are signs that employment growth may be moderating. For example, the net employment outlook for the third quarter for the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater area is 11% — the difference between the 15% of respondents who plan to hire more people and the 4% who plan to reduce staff. That's a decline from the 16% net employment outlook in the second quarter and the 23% net employment outlook in the third quarter of 2015.

It's the same for the Cape Coral-Fort Myers area, where the third-quarter net employment outlook is 10%. That's a drop from the 15% net employment outlook in the second quarter and 17% in the third quarter one year ago.

In the Tampa Bay region, the employment prospects are best in construction, manufacturing, professional services, education, health and leisure. Employers in wholesale and retail trade plan layoffs, Manpower reports.

In the Cape Coral-Fort Myers area, the employment prospects are best in construction, transportation, utilities, financial activities, professional services, education, health and government. Employers in durable goods manufacturing plan to reduce staff.
