Wellcare Health Plans Inc. has hired a chief public affairs officer and announced that its chief human resources officer is leaving the Tampa-based company.

Senior vice president and chief public affairs officer Rhonda Mims joined the government-sponsored managed care provider on Tuesday, where she will be responsible for strategic communications, public policy, diversity and inclusion, philanthropy and corporate social responsibility, among other duties.

WellCare also announced Larry Anderson, a company senior vice president and its chief human resources officer, will leave Oct. 1. Beginning this week, Anderson is also no longer considered an executive officer at WellCare.

Anderson had been with the company for nearly six years. WellCare did not say why Anderson was leaving or why his executive duties were being curtailed in the interim. He will remain at WellCare through the end of September to “assist with the transition of his duties and responsibilities,” the company says in a statement.

WellCare is currently searching for Anderson's replacement, and Michael Yount, a company senior vice president and its chief compliance officer, will fill the human resources post until a new hire is made.

In her new role, Mims will report to WellCare CEO Ken Burdick and be a member of the company's executive leadership team. She joins WellCare from law firm Paul Hastings LLP, where she was director of corporate responsibility and oversaw the firm's diversity and inclusion strategies, charitable giving and volunteer efforts.

Previously, Mims was chief diversity officer for ING U.S./Voya Financial and led the related U.S./Voya Foundation. She had also worked there as an ethics officer and in government affairs.

An attorney, Mims also worked in a legal capacity for the U.S. Department of Justice; the National District Attorney Association's American Prosecutor's Research Institute; and the South Carolina Office of Attorney General.

WellCare, which administers services through Medicaid, Medicare Advantage and Medicare prescription drug plans, had roughly 3.8 million members as of June 30.The firm had $13.8 billion in revenues in 2015.
