FORT MYERS — Fort Myers Technical College is starting a cybersecurity program that will teach students techniques to defend companies against computer attacks.

The 750-hour program that begins next week will teach how to protect networks, computers, programs and data from attack and unauthorized access. It will focus on the development of a wide range of skills, including computer operating systems; programming languages; web page design; computer and network security; intrusion detection and prevention; risk identification; and recovery, planning and analysis.

“Information technology maintains a thriving presence within society, and Fort Myers Technical College has recognized a growing need in Southwest Florida for knowledgeable professionals that are capable of meeting the rising demand for cybersecurity,” says Bill McCormick, director of Fort Myers Technical College, in a statement.

“The new applied cybersecurity program will prepare students for the business world by teaching the fundamentals of this field and facilitating the development of the problem-solving and analysis skills that are essential for cybersecurity professionals to succeed,” McCormick adds in the statement.

Founded in 1966, Fort Myers Technical College provides more than 30 vocational and technical programs.
