FORT MYERS — Mining industry executive Henry Slack was named chairman of the board of Alico, the landowner and agriculture company once controlled by the family of Florida citrus baron Ben Hill Griffin Jr.
Most recently, Slack was chairman of Terra Industries, a publicly traded nitrogen-fertilizer company that was acquired in 2010 by CF Industries. Slack currently is senior partner of financial-advisory firm Quarterwatch in New Jersey where he lives.
Born in Dayton, Ohio, Slack attended secondary school in Switzerland and earned a history degree from Princeton University. He started his career as a trainee in the finance division of gold miner Anglo American in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Slack rose to become personal assistant to Anglo American Chairman Harry Oppenheimer and remained in that position until Oppenheimer retired in 1982. He then joined the board of Anglo American and became CEO of natural-resource conglomerate Minorco, which Anglo American subsequently acquired in 1999.
A group of New York-based private-equity investors acquired a majority stake in Alico from the Griffin heirs late last year for nearly $138 million.
