Stetson University is working with a New York commercial real estate firm with strong ties to Tampa on plans to redevelop its law school campus in the city into a mixed-use development.

The plans, announced Thursday morning, call for Stetson to work with Bromley Cos. to transform its 6.5-acre property at 1700 N. Tampa St. into a space that will maintain its academic focus but add hotel, residential, office, retail, and food and beverage uses.

Bromley is the developer behind the $1.8 billion Midtown Tampa.

According to a statement, the groundbreaking on the Stetson redevelopment is expected to happen late next year but the timing for the construction of the multiphase project is still being determined.

“As currently envisioned, the project would convert underutilized land into an active district that supports Tampa’s continued growth as a walkable urban center while broadening the area’s economic base,” Stetson and Bromley say in the statement.

The Tampa Law Center, near downtown, opened in 2004 and is part of the DeLand university’s FlexJD part-time law program.

The university and the developer say the construction of new center will be part of the first phase and that there will be no disruption to coursework or campus operations as the development progresses.
