With a plan to expand its pharmaceutical solutions arm, St. Petersburg-based engineering and manufacturing giant Jabil recently secured a deal to acquire Pharmaceutics International Inc., or Pii. The Maryland firm is a contract development and manufacturing organization focused on aseptic filling, lyophilization and oral solid dose manufacturing in early stage, clinical and commercial volumes.
Pii, located in Hunt Valley just north of Baltimore, has over 70 manufacturing rooms across 360,000 square feet. The rooms include containment suites for delicate compounds, an aseptic facility and microbiology laboratories, among others. These assets are poised to assist Jabil to meet demands of its health care clients, according to a statement from the company.

With our shared commitment to creating the best solutions possible for patients around the world, we believe the addition of Pii’s capabilities, supported by over 300 team members, is a perfect fit for Jabil and our customers,” says James O’Gorman, vice president, pharmaceutical solutions, at Jabil in the statement. “The convergence of Jabil’s and Pii’s complementary capabilities will bolster Jabil's customer offering and support business growth potential as we enter the CDMO market.”
It's the second acquisition for the firm since it bought Mikros Technologies, a New Hampshire company that makes “liquid cooling solutions for thermal management" last fall.
Jabil was founded in Detroit in 1966 and moved its headquarters to St. Pete in 1982. The name Jabil is a portmanteau of its cofounders James Golden and Bill Morean. The firm, through many pivots and acquisitions over the years, now boasts 140,000 employees at over 100 sites worldwide according to its website. it had $28.9 billion in fiscal 2024.
