Fast-growing Manatee County real estate technology company PropLogix has taken a big step toward putting a dent into one the region’s looming issues: attracting and retaining top employees.

Its answer? An internal leadership program run by a former U.S. Army captain who oversaw logistics in the military, among other duties. The first class of employees, a group of eight, recently graduated from the 16-week course of biweekly sessions. PropLogix Director of Operations Chad Burlingame, a onetime executive with KB Home and COO at Arthur Rutenberg Homes in Clearwater, is at the helm of the leadership program.

“We saw a unique opportunity to nurture the talent that is already here,” Burlingame, who also spent a decade in the Army, says in a statement. “We’re only going to keep growing, and we’d like to make sure our employees are ready to take on the leadership roles of tomorrow.”

The size of tomorrow is getting bigger by the year at PropLogix. It had $11.85 million in revenue in 2017. That’s more than double 2015, and up 948% from $1.13 million in 2014. With some 90 employees, the company’s niche is in helping clients find fees, liens or assessments on properties, to help ensure an acquisition closes. It’s a millennial-fueled workplace, down to the beanbags and bright break rooms.

“For a lot of people here, this is their first job,” Burlingame tells Coffee Talk. “And we don’t want to have to (always) go outside the company” to find new rising leaders.

The leadership course includes formal instruction on communications, public speaking, coaching and conducting meetings. It also delves into how to give performance expectations and 30-day and 90-day reviews. The class is split between classroom work, one-on-ones with Burlingame and projects. Says Burlingame: “We have an obligation to develop our people as leaders.”
