Retailer to spend $200 million in Florida on new stores, upgrades

Big changes are coming to some Florida Walmart stores.

Over the next year, the company plans to spend about $200 million to open and remodel 43 stores in the state and introduce in-store and online changes. The remodels include Walmart stores in Tampa, Sarasota, Port Richey, Pinellas Park, Haines City, Gibsonton, Clearwater and Naples.

Todd Owen, a market manager for Walmart in the Tampa area, says the changes aim to create a more seamless and convenient shopping experience for customers. “Shopping habits are changing faster than ever, so we’re listening to our customers and responding to their needs with new ways to save them both time and money,” he says in an email response to questions. 

Details about what improvements will be made to certain stores haven’t been finalized yet, adds Owen.

Stores in the area could see changes such as the addition of Pickup Towers where customers can pick up online orders; sleeker electronics departments; more self-checkout stations; updated pharmacies with private consultation rooms; and expanded Walmart MoneyCenters. Customers might also see new signage and flooring; new fixtures and lighting; refreshed bathrooms; and wider aisles.
