The Tampa and Lakeland areas recently claimed the state's top spots for job creation, according to the latest state employment data.
The Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater area posted a gain of 40,500 jobs over the year ending in November. That was the biggest over-the-year growth in the number of jobs of any metropolitan area statewide, according to the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity.
On an annual-percentage basis, the Lakeland-Winter Haven area posted the biggest annual-percentage gain in employment in the state, with 4.1% growth.
Other cities on the Interstate 4 corridor posted high job growth, too. For example, Orlando reported annual employment gain of 39,900 jobs, a 3.5% year-over-year gain. Orlando was second behind Tampa in annual job creation, state figures show.
All but two areas of the Gulf Coast posted higher annual percentage growth in employment than the state's 3% increase. The two areas to come under the state are Punta Gorda (up 2.7%) and North Port-Sarasota-Bradenton (2.1%).
