SARASOTA — Dr. Richard Rehmeyer, a Sarasota physician for more than four decades, has been appointed to the volunteer, elected board that governs Sarasota Memorial Hospital.

Rehmeyer was named by the Sarasota County Public Hospital Board to fill a Northern District Seat 2 position vacated by Robert Strasser in September. The appointment to the nine-member panel runs until 2018, according to an announcement from the hospital.

Rehmeyer, a board-certified doctor who specializes in head and neck cancer surgery, was Sarasota Memorial's chief of staff in 1978 and 1979 and has been chairman of the hospital's Physician-Hospital Organization.

He also helped pioneer the use of lasers during laryngeal surgery.

In addition, Rehmeyer has led the Sarasota County Medical Society; been a delegate to the Florida Medical Association; served as president of the Sarasota Rotary Club; and sat on the board of the local chapter of the American Red Cross, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, the United Way and the Salvation Army over the course of his career.

The 819-bed Sarasota Memorial is among the largest public health systems in Florida, with more than 5,000 staff, 900 physicians and 600 volunteers.
