FORT MYERS — A new FedEx Ground distribution center is planned for Fort Myers.
Kansas City-based Jones Development Co. purchased 21.91 acres on the west side of Treeline Avenue South, near Southwest Florida International Airport, in two transactions for $2.2 million, property records show.
Jones Development officials declined to comment on the project. But a prominent area contractor and the construction firm Jones hired, Birmingham, Ala.-based Jim Cooper Construction, both confirmed the tenant will be FedEx.
Jones Development also filed a notice of commencement with Lee County to build a 213,508-square-foot sorting facility with parking. A separate notice filed with the county, part of an emergency access plan, says the package distribution facility will have 216 employees on staff at all times. Lee County officials issued a building permit Sept. 10 for a warehouse/distribution center with office space for the project.
The price Jones Development paid for the land equated to $102,008 per acre. The property includes 16.91 acres at 14050 Treeline Ave. S., and a 5-acre parcel to the southwest with a large retention pond. Commerce Bank is financing the project through a $16 million construction mortgage.
A Jim Cooper Construction official says it is still awaiting a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers permit before it can begin work. It typically takes eight months to build a FedEx distribution center, the official adds.
