Fort Myers surgeon Larry Black is in an Ironman league of his own.

For the eighth consecutive year, Black, 56, finished the grueling Ironman Championships in Kona, Hawaii, on Oct. 10. The race is open only to 1,800 professionals and age-group qualifiers like Black.

Black finished the race in 13th place in his age group (55-59) in 10 hours, 44 minutes out of 115 competitors in his division, according to the official results. He came in third in the 2.4-mile swim portion of the race, 17th in the 112-mile bike portion and 13th in the 26.2-mile marathon run during which he maintained an average pace of 8 minutes, 46 seconds per mile.

Translation: That's blazing fast.

Black says competitors in Kona this year faced the toughest weather conditions he's seen in the eight years, with strong winds slowing the bike portion of the race. But he says he was pleased with his performance on the run, which he says has been the main focus of his training this year.
