Florida Gulf Coast University is looking for a regional economist.

The Fort Myers-based university seeks a new director for its Regional Economic Research Institute to replace Gary Jackson, an economics professor who is the current director. “I do plan to retire at the end of the spring term,” says Jackson.

Jackson, who was the founding director of the institute in 2005, is widely known in the region for his analysis of economic trends. He regularly makes presentations to business groups, highlighting trends such as employment, housing and tourism.

The institute publishes a monthly regional economic indicator report, a quarterly business-climate survey and it assists regional economic development organizations with data for industry recruiters. The institute also works closely with the regional planning council.

The job requires a Ph.D. in economics and a successful applicant must be a professor at the Lutgert College of Business. The job's annual salary is negotiable, but the winning candidate will get an extra $10,000 to be the institute's director, according to the job posting on FGCU's website.

The start date is Jan. 1, but FGCU will start reviewing candidates Oct. 28. Jackson says he will stay through the spring to help with the transition. He says he plans to travel and perhaps teach in retirement.
He plans to remain in the area and has a home in Cape Coral.
