WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Rep. Trey Radel, a Republican freshman congressman from Fort Myers, is scheduled to be arraigned today after he was charged with cocaine possession, the Associated Press reported.
In a statement late Tuesday, Radel says he plans to seek treatment and counseling. “I'm profoundly sorry to let down my family, particularly my wife and son, and the people of Southwest Florida. I struggle with the disease of alcoholism, and this led to an extremely irresponsible choice,” the statement says.
Radel did not say whether he plans to resign. “In facing this charge, I realize the disappointment my family, friends and constituents must feel. Believe me, I am disappointed in myself, and I stand ready to face the consequences of my actions,” he says in the statement.
Radel, a television and radio journalist, beat a crowded field of candidates last year to win the seat vacated by Connie Mack, who unsuccessfully ran for U.S. Senate against Sen. Bill Nelson. Radel's opponents included Florida State Reps. Gary Aubuchon and Paige Kreegel.
