NEW PORT RICHEY — Silent film star Gloria Swanson and baseball legend Babe Ruth once enjoyed the charms of the Hacienda Hotel on Main Street. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the hotel fell on hard times, years ago.
But now Pasco County is cleaning up the historic hotel—400 volunteers spent two days removing broken glass, painting walls, and digging irrigation lines. The next step in the hotel's redevelopment is to determine a new use for the structure.
The Pasco Economic Development Council is conducting a survey of New Port Richey residents and businesses to find out what the community would like to see happen with the Hacienda Hotel as it is restored.
“Many people have been wondering what the Hacienda Hotel will be used for in the future,” says John Hagen, CEO of the council. “This survey will help gather important information to guide the city in its decision.”
Built in 1920, the Hacienda Hotel was called a “Bit of Old Spain Amid the Palms” and was a favorite of silent film stars. The hotel eventually became an assisted-living facility, and since 2006 has been vacant.
More than 10,000 people will be asked to submit their views on the building's future through the survey. The survey is available by clicking here.
