If Lee County declares a two-year moratorium on taxes on new construction, that could give the county a huge economic advantage over its neighbors and boost the housing recovery in the Fort Myers area.
Cecil Pendergrass, the newly elected Lee County commissioner, told a gathering of real estate executives in Fort Myers that he supports the effort to impose a moratorium on so-called “impact fees,” which are one-time taxes on all new construction.
Pendergrass and Larry Kiker, the former mayor of Fort Myers Beach, both won election to the county commission with a lower-tax, pro-business platform.
However, it's not clear which of the other three commissioners will join the new duo in their efforts to lower the tax on builders. Expect a heated debate on the matter on Jan. 14.
