ST. PETERSBURG — Allegiant Air recently surpassed a milestone at the St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport, with 4 million total fliers.

The Las Vegas-based airline has served the airport since Nov. 16, 2006, when it flew its first flight, to Allentown, Pa., according to a release. It now serves 25 cities nonstop from the airport, where six of its planes are based. The airline brings 300,000 people to the region a year, the release says.

“More than six years ago, Allegiant began a successful partnership with the St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport by offering Allentown residents low-cost, nonstop flights and complete vacation packages in the Tampa Bay Area,” Allegiant Travel Co. President Andrew Levy says in the release. “We thank PIE and our customers for their continued support in this region, as this milestone would not have been reached without them.”

Allegiant carries nearly 3.5 million passengers to and from Florida each year. It also serves the Punta Gorda airport in Charlotte County, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and Orlando-Sanford International Airport.
