TAMPA — Danielle “Remi” Denson was sentenced to six years and four months in federal prison for a tax fraud case in which authorities allege she filed 323 fraudulent returns worth more than $1.64 million.

A Hillsborough Country resident, Denson pleaded guilty in December to defrauding the Internal Revenue Service and aggravated identity theft, according to a release from the U.S. Attorney's office in Tampa. Authorities contend Denson, from 2008 to 2011, attempted to file returns worth more than $2.36 million. The IRS rejected some of those returns.

The fraud was unraveled May 31, 2011, when local and federal agencies executed a search warrant at Denson's Riverview apartment, the release states. “During the search, officers discovered documents consistent with the filing of fraudulent federal income tax returns using stolen identities, commonly referred to as Stolen Identity Refund Fraud (SIRF),” states the release. “Specifically, officers recovered hundreds of pages of handwritten and typed ledgers listing individuals' names, social security numbers, and refund amounts. The recovered documents also included printed confirmations from turbotax.com showing the successful filing of federal income tax returns in other people's names.”

Denson, authorities say, used reloadable debit cards to purchase money orders and retrieve the tax refunds from the fraudulently filed tax returns. Law enforcement, in the apartment search, also found receipts, shopping bags, clothing and accessories from luxury retail establishments, including Gucci, the release states. Officials, who say Denson has had no reported source of income since January 2008, also seized $101,800 and a 2006 Nissan 350Z.
