A 1-year-old airline based in Fort Lauderdale might expand to the Sarasota-Manatee region.
The new airline, Silver Airways, was founded in May 2011 after it was built out of the remnants of Gulfstream International Airlines. It currently operates 120 turboprop daily flights to destinations in Florida, the Bahamas, Montana, Ohio, New York, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. On the Gulf Coast the airline offers daily service from Tampa International Airport, where destinations include Fort Lauderdale, Gainesville, Key West, Pensacola and Tallahassee. The airline flies through an alliance agreement with United Airlines and Copa Airlines.
Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport could be next on the airline's expansion itinerary, airline officials say, though a start date and agreement isn't imminent. “They are looking at expansion all over the state,” spokesman Steve Bennett told the Business Review today.
Victory Park Capital, a Chicago-based investment firm, owns Silver Airways. Victory Park founded the airline after it bought assets from what was Gulfstream International Airlines. Gulfstream filed for bankruptcy in November 2010. The Silver Airways fleet includes Saab 340Bplus aircrafts and Beechcraft 1900D aircrafts. The Saab 340Bplus planes are the largest in the fleet, with a 34-seat capacity.
