A Gulf Coast organization devoted to promoting international trade will have its inaugural lunch Aug. 3 in Sarasota, where the topic will be the recently signed U.S-Colombia free trade agreement.

Colombia native Jorge Chacón, a semi-retired executive in Sarasota, founded the group, the International Business Alliance. “The idea is to help us get known more as an international commerce center,” Chacón tells Coffee Talk.

Chacón says Colombia is a good place to start because of the new trade agreement. He hopes the main topic of discussion at future meetings could be countries such as Brazil and Chile. “A lot of (international) people know a lot about Miami,” says Chacón. “But they don't know too much about the Gulf Coast of Florida.”

The lunch fee is $35. Scheduled speakers include Carmenza Jaramillo, the Director of PROEXPORT - Miami; Juliana Ceballos and Jorge Andres Cortes of the Colombian American Chamber of Commerce in Miami; and Rebecca Torres with the Tampa Bay Export Assistance Center, an arm of the U.S. Department of Commerce.

The lunch is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. at Cafe Amici, on 1371 Main St., Sarasota. Contact Jorge Chacón at 941-921-1700 or [email protected] for more information.
