The average paycheck size for employees and the hiring index in the Tampa area dropped slightly in July, according to a new survey from SurePayroll.
The SurePayroll Small Business Scorecard reported that hiring in the region fell 0.1% since June, while paycheck size dropped 0.7% month-over-month. The average paycheck size in Tampa is now down 5.2% year-over-year, according to SurePayroll, while hiring year-over-year is up 1.4%.
SurePayroll is an online payroll service for small businesses. On a national level, SurePayroll reports that that monthly hiring rate is flat — the first time since February that the monthly figure wasn't negative. Year-over-year nationwide hiring is down 1.6%, and paychecks have dropped 1.2% on an annual basis, the survey reports.
While pay and hiring levels teeter, the survey also found that optimism among small business owners is up, from 60% in June to 62% in July. The most telling survey nugget: More than two-thirds of the respondents, 70%, would encourage others to go into business for themselves — even in the current economic climate.
“Small business owners are optimistic by nature, and they know that if you have a good idea you can take advantage of the lower costs in this economy and be successful,” SurePayroll CEO and President Michael Alter says in a release. “Still, we need more incentives for investors to back startups and less tax burdens on small businesses.”
