TAMPA -- The NHL's Tampa Bay Lightning are delivering technologically advanced jerseys to season ticket holders this year.

Each jersey has a radio frequency (RF) chip installed, allowing stadium vendors to automatically detect season ticket holders and offer them discounts. The team can also automatically collect data on season ticket holder purchases, explains team Executive Vice President Brad Lott.

“This innovative technology enables us to track and identify spending patterns and preferences of our season ticket members to help us provide even better service,” Lott says in a release.

The Lightning partnered with NCR Corp., a Duluth, Ga.-based firm with $4.8 billion in 2010 revenues, to create the jerseys. Project costs were not disclosed.
