The Sarasota County Commission awarded a nearly $3.7-million construction contract to Highway Safety Devices Inc. of Tampa.

The project, the Advanced Traffic Management System, is designed to create a traffic control system with upgraded traffic signals and an interconnected fiber optic network. The contract was for phase one of the project, which will affect 123 intersections in Sarasota and Venice.

Phase one funding is provided by an infrastructure surtax and an FDOT grant.
