FORT MYERS — The Templeton family that owns Fort Myers Toyota has agreed to sell the dealership to AutoNation. Terms were not disclosed.

In a letter to the media, Pamela Templeton explained, “My father and mother have reached a time in life where they wish to simplify their life.”

“Recently AutoNation, the largest automotive group in America, has made the family an acceptable offer,” she said.

Templeton recently forced local transportation officials to cancel their plans to build an elevated roadway in front of her family's dealership. The project had been slated to run from Charlotte County into Fort Myers, and costs were estimated to reach $1 billion.

Once the project had been called off, Fort Myers Councilman Tom Leonardo argued that Templeton's efforts helped keep an entire city's economy going. “Eight of the city's top 10 commercial taxpayers are on the Colonial expressway,” he argued. “We saved the City of Fort Myers from financial collapse.”

Templeton's story was featured on the cover of a December issue of the Business Review.
