Raymond Lutgert, the man most responsible for transforming the beachfront skyline of Naples, died on May 28. He was 90.

A noted artist and philanthropist who seldom ventured in public in his later years, Lutgert developed 17 luxury high-rise towers on Park Shore Beach in Naples and was a benefactor of the business school at Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers, among other charitable endeavors. The Lutgert College of Business is named in his honor.

“He was unique, eclectic, a good businessman, a creative person, a very good artist,” recalled Lamar Gable, chairman of the board of Barron Collier Companies, who worked on development projects with Lutgert since the mid 1960s. “He lived life on his own terms. We will miss him very much.”

In addition to condos, Lutgert developed shopping centers and offices including Mercato in North Naples, the Village on Venetian Bay in Naples and The Promenade at Bonita Bay in Bonita Springs.

Besides flagship Lutgert Development, the Lutgert Companies also include Lutgert Insurance, Lutgert Title, residential brokerage Premier Properties of Southwest Florida and commercial brokerage Premier Commercial Properties. Raymond Lutgert's son, Scott Lutgert, now runs the company.
