Bolstered by a 59% job approval rating, Gov. Charlie Crist is leading the upcoming race for Florida's vacant seat in the U.S. Senate, according to a recent poll of 800 registered Florida voters.

Crist has a six-point lead in a hypothetical three-way race with Republican Marco Rubio and Democrat Kendrick Meek, the poll shows. And that lead would increase by two points if Jeff Greene were to win the Democratic nomination over Meek.

The race to become Florida's next governor is less clear. Both Bill McCollum and Rick Scott hold a three-point lead over likely Democratic candidate Alex Sink in three-way races that include independent candidate Lawton “Buddy” Chiles, but the poll's 3.5% margin of error suggest the race is too close to call at this point.

The survey, conducted by Public Strategies Inc. at the end of July, also posed questions about Florida's property insurance environment. A majority of respondents were unaware of the state's ability to tax insurance policies to subsidize Citizens' policies.

A 55% majority said people living along Florida's coast should pay more for insurance than inland residents.

Full results of the Public Strategies poll are available for download online.
