Dermazone Solutions, a St. Petersburg nanotechnology company specializing in skin care products, has created a division for its latest product, which also works internally.

Hyssop Health markets an herbal supplement made from wild mountain-grown oregano imported from the Mediterranean that is available in both oral and topical forms. The company takes its name from the Biblical reference to this type of oregano, which is far different from what goes into pasta sauce and a bit more complicated to harvest.

Studies over the last two years have shown that Hyssop's product, dubbed Therapy, is effective in eliminating bacteria, fungi and viruses that cause acne, strep and influenza, and in some cases outperformed antibiotics and other prescription remedies. The company claims the effects of origanum vulgare can be attributed to 49 phytoelements affecting nine areas of the body.

Like most herbal supplements, Hyssop Health Primary does not have a seal of approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. But Deborah Duffey, Dermazone president, says her company can back up those claims.

“It's always a challenge for science-based companies to share the information we have gathered over the years without making drug claims,” Duffey tells Coffee Talk. “We certainly don't want to do anything that would damage our reputation, but we want to share the information.”

Duffey, whose company was profiled in the Gulf Coast Business Review last December, says Dermazone invested nearly $1 million into bringing its new oregano supplement to market.

The most important aspect to Hyssop, which can currently be ordered online, is that it is can be counted among the various alternatives to products heavily advertised by major pharmaceutical companies, Duffey says. “Now more than ever,” she says, “it's of critical importance that people take control of their health and well being.”
