It's no secret that newspapers have been hemorrhaging newsroom talent to stay afloat. The market is flooded with veteran reporters and editors who took early buyout packages, or were simply let go, and are now looking for work.
That actually bodes will for a publication such as Creative Loafing, a left-leaning alternative newsweekly with publications in Tampa, Sarasota, Chicago, Washington, D.C., Charlotte and Atlanta. The company should find an ample supply of journalists that will be a good fit.
Creative Loafing announced this week that Mary Petty, a veteran executive at the St. Petersburg Times and the Hartford Courant, would be the new chief executive officer, bringing decades of journalism experience to the organization.
“These remain vibrant markets,” Petty says in a release. “It's a wide open field as all media are challenged to redefine themselves to meet consumers changing lifestyles and information needs.”
The main challenge: create relevant content that readers want to read, thereby driving advertising sales. Easier said than done.
