Ray Judah, the chairman of the Lee County Commission and longtime environmental advocate, faulted Gov. Charlie Crist for missing Barack Obama's visit to Arcadia recently.
Obama visited the DeSoto County town Oct. 27 to check out the Florida Power & Light solar-power facility and announce a $3.4 billion program to improve the nation's electric grid.
But Crist, the “green” governor who embraced Obama when he visited Fort Myers in February to tout government stimulus spending, skipped the presidential visit this time around.
“Was there even one state legislator there?” Judah complained to a Fort Myers group called Business People United for Political Action Committee.
Although Judah is a Republican, he sounded more like a Democrat. As every Republican who is running for office next year knows, embracing Obama or any of the Democrats' “green” legislative efforts is a sure way to lose an election in a Republican state or district.
Crist is running for the U.S. Senate and is facing former Florida House Speaker Marco Rubio in the Republican primary. Rubio, a favorite among conservatives, has sliced into Crist's lead.
