In an extraordinary move, state Sen. Mike Bennett, R-Bradenton, is charging that Florida Insurance Commissioner Kevin McCarty was “dishonest” in dealing with the Legislature over a new insurance law and is asking for his resignation.
Saying that the Legislature and he “are no longer able to trust your word,” Bennett asked McCarty to resign, and if he does not, has asked Gov. Charlie Crist to fire him.
The legislation allows Floridians the choice to buy insurance from companies whose rates are not regulated by Tallahassee if they want to. This introduction of choice is designed to get more big insurance companies in Florida and put a smaller onus on
Florida's taxpayers through the state-run Citizens Property Insurance. It also is in response to the decision by the state's largest private insurer, State Farm, to pull out of Florida.
Bennett said McCarty worked closely with him and the Legislature to craft the bill, and now McCarty is urging Crist to veto the legislation because of the unregulated rates.
