A suburban Philadelphia company thinks it has found the answer to water conservation problems that plague golf courses nationwide — and it's using a Sarasota golf course to prove it.

Advanced Sensor Technology is taking its so-called wireless soil-sensor technology on the road, with a key stop at Misty Creek Country Club in Sarasota. The company calls its product an UgMO, for underground monitoring.

The UgMO can measure and analyze the soil moisture, temperature and salinity of a golf course, the company says. With its real-time software, the product can then control the amount of water sprayed onto a course.

The UgMO will be available nationwide, but AST officials say they chose Florida, and specifically Sarasota, because the area is both golf course and drought heavy.

In addition to Misty Creek, AST has signed on pro golfer Gary Player as an endorser and partner for UgMO. Says Player in a statement: “This is breakthrough, environmental technology that gives golf course superintendents, property owners, architects, designers and others in this business the information that's always been missing.”
