CHARLOTTE COUNTY — Charlotte County has become the latest, and the 40th county in Florida, to reach a bed tax agreement with online hospitality firm Airbnb.
The agreement will allow Airbnb to collect and remit bed taxes on behalf of its local hosts, according to a statement. The agreement is effective May 1.
About 350 residents share their homes on the Airbnb platform, the company says. In 2017, those hosts welcomed about 7,400 guests while earning over $1.6 million in supplemental income, the release states.
In Florida, Airbnb has been collecting and remitting state sales taxes on all statewide bookings since 2015, the release states. The list of counties in the neighboring area it has agreements with includes Lee, Sarasota, Hendry, DeSoto and Glades.
“It is Airbnb Florida’s stated policy agenda to deliver new revenue and secure tax agreements with all 63 Florida counties that assess a bed tax — including Manatee and Highlands,” the Airbnb release states. “Airbnb has a dedicated Florida policy team, to partner with county policymakers and help accommodate their individual needs.
